Fergus McCreadie Trio

The eagerly-awaited appearance in Kirkcaldy of one of the UK’s brightest new jazz stars lived up to all the advance billing. An audience of around 70 were held spellbound by the opening medley, a 30-minute uninterrupted exploration of several of the tunes from both “Turas” and “Cairn”. Fergus said afterwards that he simply got into a groove right away and just kept going! The outburst of applause at the end of the piece was one of the loudest and most sustained ever heard in the Old Kirk. The tone was set for the rest of the evening, with the trio presenting both familiar and new pieces (a third album is already recorded and due for release in 2022), with thrilling group interplay and dynamics and at times rhapsodic piano from Fergus. A truly memorable evening of music-making of the highest calibre.
Scottish pianist Fergus McCreadie’s star quality has been evident since his early teens growing up in Dollar playing with school and youth groups. He recorded and self-released his debut album ‘Turas’ at the age of 19, announcing himself on the national scene as a composer and performer of rare sensitivity, flair and virtuosity. His music has roots in both Scottish traditional/folk music and jazz, creating a unique and beguiling style of his own.
A host of awards followed ‘Turas’, including Album of the Year at both the Parliamentary and Scottish Jazz Awards in 2018 and Best Instrumentalist at the 2020 Scottish Jazz Awards. He was a finalist in the 2018 BBC Young Jazz Musician of the Year.
His second album ‘Cairn’, for the UK’s premier jazz label Edition Records, has catapulted him to international fame. The album has attracted rave reviews and nominations for yet more awards, including Scottish Album of the Year, Jazz FM’s Jazz Act of the Year and Album of the Year. A third album has been recorded and awaits release.
“’Cairn’ represents vivid evidence of an evolution already earning comparisons with the early work of Esbjorn Svensson….a fusion of Celtic traditions and the global expressiveness of swing and funk grooves drives this fine set of McCreadie originals”. JAZZWISE
